REASONING: A free marketplace of ideas is important. Yet in many countries governments monopolize the publication of information. This crowds out other ideas.

ANALYSIS: This is a long stimulus, but not all that hard. Take the time to read questions like this twice; you will actually be able to answer them faster once you clearly understand the issues.

  1. The journalist’s conclusion goes beyond that. He wants governments’ power over the media to be curtailed, so as to preserve the freedom of the marketplace of ideas.
  2. The journalist would agree, but that’s not their conclusion. Rather, it is a reason to reduce the power of governments.
  3. CORRECT. Yes. Everything else in the argument supports this idea.
  4. The journalist agrees, and uses this as a reason to support the reductions of governments’ media role. Even bad ideas need space to be heard.
  5. This is just a claim supporting the conclusion that governments’ media power ought to be reduced.
