QUESTION TEXT: Laila: Though lying may be unacceptable in most cases…

QUESTION TYPE: Principle

CONCLUSION: Lying is morally permissible if it brings more good than harm.

ANALYSIS: We need two things: 1. evidence of a benefit; 2. not outweighed by other harm.

___________

  1. Not bad is insufficient; his lie must lead to good.
  2. No evidence of good done here. He might help his friend, but it’s hard to say if that is good or bad.
  3. Not unless you’re helping yourself, and not harming others.
  4. CORRECT. Yes. We have a benefit (helps Thomas), and proof that it is not outweighed by other harm.
  5. There is a benefit, but also a risk of harm. It’s unclear if a lie is permissible.
