LR Question 4 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Industry experts expect improvements in job safety training…

QUESTION TYPE: Paradox

PARADOX: Job safety training led to an increase in the number of accidents.

ANALYSIS: Always, always pay attention to whether a question is talking about a number (e.g., 1,000) or a rate (e.g., 10%).

A safer work environment (the expert’s predicted result) will lead to a lower accident rate. But the number of accidents could go up or down, depending on whether the workforce grew or shrank.

___________

  1. This info about a different sector is irrelevant, and it offers no explanation. It might have been relevant if it offered a reason, but it didn’t.
  2. CORRECT. If the workforce increased in size, this could explain the increase in the number of accidents, despite a lower rate of accidents due to safety training.
  3. This could explain why the training was implemented, but not why the number of accidents continued to increase after the training.
  4. This shows the numbers are meaningful, but it doesn’t help explain them.
  5. The job safety training represented an improvement from the baseline. It doesn’t matter what the baseline level of safety was; we would expect things to get safer after an improvement.

Recap: The question begins with “Industry experts expect improvements in job safety training”. It is a Paradox question. Learn more about LSAT Paradox questions in our guide to LSAT Logical Reasoning question types.
