LSAT Preptest 126 explanations

LR Question 6 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Commentator: In many countries the influence of fringe…

QUESTION TYPE: Weaken

CONCLUSION: Existing national cultures are threatened by modern culture.

REASONING: Modern culture is creating new subcultures at an increasing rate.

ANALYSIS: The stimulus doesn’t explain how new subcultures threaten existing national cultures. That’s a big weakness.

___________

  1. This strengthens the stimulus. It argues that old national identities are threatened. The emergence of new national identities supports this.
  2. CORRECT. This weakens the stimulus. Existing national cultures could safely accommodate many new subcultures.
  3. If anything, this strengthens the conclusion, which argues that the preservation of existing national cultures will be more difficult.
  4. That may be, but the stimulus is making a prediction about national culture. It is not claiming the change would be good or bad.
  5. As in D, this is irrelevant. The stimulus is making a claim without judgment.

Recap: The question begins with “Commentator: In many countries the influence of fringe”. It is a Weaken question. Learn more about LSAT Weaken questions in our guide to LSAT Logical Reasoning question types.
