LR Question 13 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Consumer advocate: A recent study concluded that top-loading…

QUESTION TYPE: Necessary Assumption

CONCLUSION: Front-loading washing machines are superior for some users.

ANALYSIS: The stimulus points out, correctly, that frontloading machines are superior in one respect to top-loading machines for users in wheelchairs. But, they do not tell us whether there are other features of front-loading machines which make them worse, even for wheelchair users.

For their argument to be correct, they must assume that any disadvantages of front-loading machines do not outweigh the single advantage they mentioned.

___________

  1. CORRECT. Negate the “some” and you get: “For no consumers does the convenience of front-loaders outweigh the advantages of top-loaders.” A little blunt, but this is certainly something they must assume for the argument to be correct.
  2. No. In fact they are explicitly comparing washing machines of different types (top vs. front loaders).
  3. They don’t need to assume convenience is the only important factor. They only need to assume that of the other important factors, their advantages do not outweigh convenience.
  4. Not a necessary assumption; their main concern is proving that top loaders are not convenient for wheelchair users.
  5. As in D, not a necessary assumption. They only need to establish that top loaders are worse for wheelchair users.

Recap: The question begins with “Consumer advocate: A recent study concluded that top-loading”. It is a Necessary Assumption question. Learn how to master LSAT Necessary questions on the LSAT Logical Reasoning question types page.
