LSAT Preptest 116 explanations

LR Question 24 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Human resources director: While only some recent university…

QUESTION TYPE: Must be True

ANALYSIS: We know three things:

  1. Some recent graduates consider work environment important.
  2. They all consider salary and vacation policy important.
  3. If you consider stress important, you’re part of a small group of veteran employees.

You could diagram it like this:

  1. Work environment important SOME Recent Graduates ➞ Salary AND Vacation Important
  2. Stress important ➞ veteran

You can always connect “some” statements to the sufficient condition of an “if then” statement. Then, you can combine the first part of the “some” statement with the necessary conditions. For example, some people who consider work environment important also consider vacation important (i.e., recent graduates).

___________

  1. This is an incorrect reversal of what we know. All university graduates consider these factors important, but we don’t know if all people who consider these factors important are university graduates.
  2. CORRECT. Yes. Some university graduates consider work environment important, and they must also consider vacation policy important, because all university graduates do.
  3. We only know that some veteran employees consider stress important; we don’t know anything else about them.
  4. This is the same error as A. This is true of recent graduates, but we don’t know what other workers think.
  5. We have nothing to indicate that veteran workers concerned about stress aren’t also concerned about salary. If they weren’t, you could pay them $1 per year and they would be happy as long as their job wasn’t stressful. Which is absurd.
