LR Question 1 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Terry: If you want to get a decent job, you should go…

QUESTION TYPE: Misinterpretation

ANALYSIS: Misinterpretation questions are fun : the second person is often pretty dense.

Terry said that wanting a job is one reason to go to college:

If you want a job ➞ go to college

Mark misunderstood him to mean that wanting a good job was the only valid reason to go to college. (If you’re at college ➞ it should be because you want a good job)

Mark reversed the sufficient and necessary conditions. This is surprisingly easy for our brains to do.

___________

  1. Mark was mainly concerned with the reasons for going to college.
  2. This would have been the right answer if Mark had said that there were other ways of getting a good job.
  3. CORRECT. Yes. Mark didn’t realize that Terry was only giving one possible reason to go to college.
  4. This amounts to the same as B. It would have been correct if Mark’s response had been that there were other ways to get trained for a decent job.
  5. Mark only talked about the reasons people might go to college. He didn’t express an opinion on whether people actually go to college.

Recap: The question begins with “Terry: If you want to get a decent job, you should go”. It is a Misinterpretation question. Learn how to master LSAT Misinterpretation questions on the LSAT Logical Reasoning question types page.
