LR Question 13 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Using clean-coal technologies to “repower” existing…

QUESTION TYPE: Must be True

FACTS: Clean coal will could eventually reduce sulfur emissions by 80% and nitrogen oxide by 50%. The reduction in nitrogen will reduce the formation of noxious (bad) ozone in the atmosphere.

Also, the full range of pollutants in acid rain will be affected.

ANALYSIS: It’s important to note that the stimulus only claims that the pollutants could be reduced by the adoption of clean coal.

___________

  1. We have no idea. These emissions will be cut the most, but there could be some other pollutant that is more important.
  2. We only know that ozone is formed in the atmosphere by nitrogen oxides. We haven’t a clue if it is formed in factories by sulfur.
  3. We don’t know. It is surely better that less sulfur dioxide will be emitted. But we’re not told what level is safe.
  4. We only know that clean coal “could” reduce emissions. We don’t know if this will actually happen. And likely more than a “few” factories will need to make changes before the reduction will be substantial.
  5. CORRECT. Yes. If factories adopt clean coal, then it could be the case that less nitrogen oxide is emitted. If that happens, less ozone will form in the atmosphere.

Recap: The question begins with “Using clean-coal technologies to “repower” existing”. It is a Must be True question. Learn how to master LSAT MBT questions on the LSAT Logical Reasoning question types page.
