LSAT 133 | Section 4 | Reading Comprehension: Q13

LSAT Preptest 133 explanations

RC Question 13 Explanation

DISCUSSION: To answer a question like this, you must reread the section of the passage that talks about The Awakening.

I just did that, and it took me all of five seconds to find the answer. The Awakening is discussed in lines 51-57. It used impressionism more fully than the New Women did.

___________

  1. The New Women did this too: lines 50-52.
  2. The New Women did this too: lines 44-47.
  3. CORRECT. Lines 52-54 say this directly.
  4. Total nonsense. Lines 52-57 don’t mention fantasy. Only line 45 mentions fantasy: The New Women used it.
  5. Line 55 contradicts this: The Awakening was not unified by style or content.

The passage reads “In THE AWAKENING, Chopin embraced this impressionistic approach more fully to produce….” The reason I got this wrong is because I read it as Chopin embraced the impressionistic method created by the New Women more fully. Not that she embraced it MORE THAN the New Women. Could it be argued that this was written poorly and therefore should be thrown out?

I think the wording is fine, as one of the purposes of the LSAT is to make you read more carefully. Since you now have an experience of misreading a concept, going forward, it would be good to re-read or skim certain paragraphs to make sure you understand what specifically is being discussed.
