LR Question 2 Explanation, by LSATHacks

QUESTION TEXT: For years, a rare variety of camel was endangered…

QUESTION TYPE: Paradox

FACTS: A type of camel experienced population decline because it lived in a weapons testing ground. Now that the testing is done, the camels are dying even faster.

ANALYSIS: You have to explain why camels are dying faster, even though bombs aren’t falling on them.

There are many ways humans kill camels: we hunt them, we clear their land for farming, we build buildings in their habitat, etc.

The bombs would have prevented us from harming camels. If bombs fall in an area, humans stay away.

This is a good example of how real world knowledge can be used appropriately to speed you up. If you grew up near an army base, you may know their training grounds often double as nature reserves.

Most of the wrong answers talk about dangers that existed when the range was in operation. We only care about dangers that arose when the range was shut down.

___________

  1. CORRECT. This helps explain the paradox. Now that the testing range is safe, poachers can come kill the camels.
  2. This doesn’t explain why camels kept dying in the years after the testing was complete. This is just a useless fact about the past.
  3. This shows that there is still some danger, but it doesn’t explain why the danger increased.
  4. This is like B. It talks about the years the testing range was in operation. We only care about the years after the range was shut down.
  5. Same as B and D. This is information about the years the range was in operation. It can’t tell us much about dangers after the range was shut down.
