LR Question 4 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Nutritionists have recommended that people eat more …

QUESTION TYPE: Weaken

FACTS:

  • Nutritionists say people should eat more fiber.
  • Ads for a new fiber supplement pill only state that it contains 44% fiber.

ANALYSIS: To be misleading by the selection of information, the ad would have to present a technically true but unhelpful or deceptive statistic.

So even though 44% fiber sounds high, if the actual amount of fiber per pill is tiny, it doesn’t really meet nutritionists’ goals.

We’re looking for an answer that shows the pill sounds more useful than it actually is.

___________

  1. This is irrelevant to whether this pill’s advertising is misleading. The existence of other products doesn’t make the claim misleading.
  2. This explains why fiber is recommended, but it doesn’t show how the ad is misleading.
  3. This is off-topic. The issue isn’t addiction, it’s whether the fiber content claim is misleading. Besides we have no reason to believe that a fiber pill has the same addictive properties as the sedatives mentioned.
  4. Tempting but incomplete. This gives you a total of three doses, but it still doesn’t tell you how much fiber is in each dose. So it doesn’t help clarify whether the 44% claim is misleading.
  5. CORRECT. Even if the pill is 44% fiber, it contains only 0.33 grams. It’s far below the recommended daily intake. So the ad emphasizes a percentage that hides how little fiber you’re actually getting.
