LSAT 147 | Section 3 | Reading Comprehension: Q25

LSAT Preptest 147 explanations

RC Question 25 Explanation

DISCUSSION: You’re looking for something not in passage B. Two of the wrong answers describe arguments that passage A makes. But passage B does respond to those arguments, so those answers are incorrect. I’m referring to answers A and E.

___________

  1. Passage B does address a threshold, in lines 48-53.
  2. This answer contradicts the passage. Passage A argues that flat taxes are practical. See lines 5-8.
  3. Neither passage talks about investment or economic growth. These topics are relevant to taxation, but this question isn’t asking you to pick something relevant in the real world. You’re supposed to find things from the passages. An answer can’t be right if the authors didn’t talk about it.
  4. CORRECT. Lines 20-26 in passage A mention this. It’s the strongest part of passage A, and passage B completely fails to address it. Reducing tax evasion and tax avoidance by rich people is a major goal of tax systems.
  5. Lines 30-39 in passage B address the claim that a progressive tax system is unfair.
