LSAT Preptest 143 explanations

RC Question 26 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Which one of the following is most analogous to…

DISCUSSION: People thought glass windows were thicker at the bottom because of physical properties of glass (See paragraph 1). The actual cause was likely the manufacturing process (see paragraph 4).

Every wrong answer mentions people’s beliefs about the manufacturing process. But in the passage, we don’t know people’s opinion of the manufacturing process.

That’s why B is right. It’s the only answer that blames people ignorance of manufacturing techniques.

___________

  1. This doesn’t match. The author never told us what people think about glass manufacturing.
  2. CORRECT. This matches. People thought the thickness of the bottom of glass windows was due to the structure of glass.
People were unaware that the actual cause was the manufacturing techniques.
  3. Same as A. Manufacturing was the actual cause (paragraph 4), but the author never said people had any beliefs about manufacturing. The author only mentioned people’s beliefs about the structure of glass itself (paragraph 1).
  4. Same as A and C. This answer mentioned people’s beliefs about how something was made. But in the passage we only know people’s beliefs about the physical structure and properties of glass (paragraph 1).
  5. Differences in modern and historical glass production are only mentioned in paragraph 4. We’re not told what people believe about these manufacturing methods.
