LR Question 4 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Monroe: Our organization’s project has been a failure…

QUESTION TYPE: Point at Issue

ARGUMENTS: Monroe says the project was a failure, because there are still 2,000 homes that lack electricity. The aim of the project was to reduce the number of homes lacking electricity as much as possible.

Wilkerson points out that originally, 5,000 homes lacked electricity. So the project brought electricity to 3,000 homes, which is pretty good.

ANALYSIS: Monroe and Wilkerson are disagreeing over how successful the project should have been. 60% of homes were given electricity. Wilkerson thinks this is enough, Monroe thinks we should have done more.

___________

  1. Both agree on this fact. It’s what this fact means for the project that they disagree about.
  2. Who knows? Monroe didn’t say how many houses lacked electricity at the start. Since we don’t know, this can’t be the basis of disagreement.
  3. This goes too far. Monroe didn’t say “one house is too many!”. They said “2,000 houses are too many!”.
  4. Monroe says this, and Wilkerson give no indication that they disagree.
  5. CORRECT. Monroe agrees. Wilkerson disagrees, because they think the reduction in houses without electricity was large enough.
