LR Question 4 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: All people residing in the country of Gradara approve…

QUESTION TYPE: Paradox

FACTS: Citizens of Gradara approve of hazardous wastes being incinerated. Yet no citizens want an incinerator built near them.

ANALYSIS: This sounds like a classic case of NIMBYism (Not In My Backyard.)

It can be quite rational to support a policy in general yet oppose that policy in one’s own neighborhood. Incineration could help the country yet harm local neighborhoods.

___________

  1. CORRECT. This does it. It is the best policy for the country as a whole. But if you have an incinerator in your neighborhood then you face increased risk.
  2. This doesn’t explain why the citizens in general support the incineration policy.
  3. This doesn’t explain the attitudes of citizens. Is this a good or a bad thing?
  4. This lessens the danger of an incinerator. It doesn’t explain why people are opposed to them.
  5. This shows why people might support an incineration policy. It doesn’t explain why people don’t want an incinerator in their neighborhood.

Recap: The question begins with “All people residing in the country of Gradara approve”. It is a Paradox question. Learn more about LSAT Paradox questions in our guide to LSAT Logical Reasoning question types.
