LSAT 150 | Section 4 | Reading Comprehension: Q16

LSAT Preptest 150 explanations

RC Question 16 Explanation

DISCUSSION: The views of dowsing skeptics are given in paragraph 2. To answer this question, skim that paragraph until you find keywords indicating a counterpoint. Here, “skeptics say….while” is the keyword. “While” means you’re admitting a small point to the other side. e.g. “While you have eaten some of your dinner, you didn’t eat all of it, so no dessert for you”.

Therefore, the skeptics have admitted that some dowsers are consistently successful. (This is totally false btw, but we have to go by what the passage says).

The wrong answers are generally things that are in the passage but said by dowsing proponents. We’re looking for something said by skeptics.

___________

  1. CORRECT. See lines 23-25.
  2. I may have missed it, but I don’t think the passage mentions scientists’ views of skeptics.
  3. This is something dowsing proponents argue. See lines 32-39 in paragraph 3.
  4. This is also something dowsing proponents argue. It comes right after answer C. See lines 39-42 in paragraph 3.
  5. This is also something proponents argue. See lines 32-34 in paragraph 3.
