LSAT 153 | Section 4 | Reading Comprehension: Q12

LSAT Preptest 153 explanations

RC Question 12 Explanation

DISCUSSION: This is an easy one, if you can find it. The passage discusses this in lines 11-13 (middle of paragraph 1), and those lines pretty much word for word say the right answer.

A possible challenge to growth in native language study is in line 11 says “despite the….effects….of this effort”. So “this effort” is the challenge to native language study, and it refers back to an earlier line, talking about a “misguided government program”.

The right answer repeats line 11, except it directly mentions the government program. It’s always important to know what a term like “this effort” refers to. You can understand sentences better if you replace “this effort” with “misguided government program”.

___________

  1. CORRECT. See the analysis above.
  2. Universities are only mentioned in lines 13-15. Those lines don’t mention the attitudes of university officials. In fact, university officials aren’t mentioned at all.
  3. This isn’t mentioned. The author did say native scholars are developing curricula, but it didn’t say whether they are worried about an extinction of languages.
  4. This is wrong on two levels. First, the passage never mentioned “more traditional means” of learning languages. Second, the author says radio has grown as a consequence of the renewed popularity of native languages.
  5. This contradicts the passage. Lines 13-15 said that universities have curriculums made by Native American scholars. The author doesn’t mention a lack.
