LSAT 149 | Section 1 | Logical Reasoning: Q1

LSAT Preptest 149 explanations

LR Question 1 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: The mayoral race in Bensburg is a choice between Chu…

QUESTION TYPE: Weaken

CONCLUSION: Chu will probably beat Lewis.

REASONING: Chu is prodevelopment. Lewis is anti-development. Prodevelopment candidates won the last six times there was a mayoral election.

ANALYSIS: It seems like being predevelopment usually helps you win. To weaken this argument, look for some difference in this election that makes predevelopment unpopular.

___________

  1. This strengthens the argument by showing Lewis lacks city politics experience.
  2. This explains why predevelopment candidates win. But we’re supposed to weaken the argument that they will win again.
  3. CORRECT. This is a change that suggests that voters will reject the predevelopment candidate this time. Development recently caused problems and voters may remember that.
  4. You might have picked this thinking that it weakened the premise the Lewis is antidevelopment. But that’s not what we’re trying to weaken: we’re trying to weaken the idea that Chu will win.

(Also, working in a predevelopment office doesn’t make you permanently pro development.
  5. So? He’s a predevelopment candidate now and predevelopment candidates usually win.
