LR Question 5 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: As the current information explosion forces the print media…

QUESTION TYPE: Identify the Conclusion

CONCLUSION: We are increasingly bombarded with inaccurate and trivial information.

REASONING: Journalistic standards are lowered as a result of competition for public attention.

ANALYSIS: The word “Consequently” is a conclusion indicator that shows that the last sentence is being supported by the previous one. Further, we can see that the stimulus follows a causal structure that goes as follows: Media competes for attention, which causes journalistic standards to lower, which causes bombardment of inaccurate and trivial information. The conclusion is the final piece of this structure.

___________

  1. The stimulus does not discuss the benefits of the information explosion at all, so we cannot compare them to the drawbacks.
  2. CORRECT. See the analysis. This answer basically rewords the conclusion given in the stimulus.
  3. This is not the conclusion because this sentence is used to support the idea given in B.
  4. This answer is like C in that it supports another sentence rather than being supported as the conclusion should be.
  5. This response might be inferred or extrapolated but is not the conclusion given in the argument. The stimulus does not discuss the reversal of journalistic standards at all.
