LSAT Preptest 154 explanations

LR Question 8 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Editorial: If current trends continue, obesity will soon…

QUESTION TYPE: Principle

CONCLUSION: Doctors need more training to treat obesity.

REASONING: Obesity will soon be leading cause of preventable illness in the country, but 45% of doctors don’t feel qualified to address weight issues.

ANALYSIS: We can prephrase here that we need some principle that says “if doctors don’t feel qualified, then they need more training”.

___________

  1. We want to say that doctors should be trained; this says the opposite of what our conclusion is arguing.
  2. We don’t care about when changes in training are warranted, we need a principle that argues that right now, doctors need more training.
  3. This argument about “doing more good” doesn’t appear at all in the stimulus.
  4. We don’t know what health conditions can be treated most effectively. We’re only concerned with obesity. As well, “treat most effectively” isn’t the same as “need more training”.
  5. CORRECT. To arrive at the conclusion that doctors need more training to treat obesity, we need a principle that says that doctors need to be able to treat preventable illnesses such as obesity.

Recap: The question begins with “Editorial: If current trends continue, obesity will soon”. It is a Principle question. Learn more about LSAT Principle questions in our guide to LSAT Logical Reasoning question types.
