Newer techniques work better, but aren’t as useful for achieving certain artistic goals.
The old methods are very labor intensive. They’re also error prone, but the artists want the errors.
___________
- The herbal medicines aren’t obviously worse at improving health. And there’s no clear aesthetic goal to using herbs.
- The high rise office building is still modern. To be analogous, the architect would have had to use the architectural drafting tools used by the ancients.
- This is close. But we don’t know why the engineer uses the older design. We do know the artists wanted the flaws that came with old methods. An engineer, on the other hand, isn’t likely to want a supercharger with flaws. Presumably he’s using the older design because he’s judged it to be more effective.
- CORRECT. This has both qualities. Older methods, and older methods used in order to produce flaws.
- This is entirely modern. The artist isn’t using old methods, and he isn’t looking to include errors.

I choose A. I think most would agree that modern biomedicine embodies what the passages describes are characteristics for the new photographic techniques: faster, cheaper, more consistent. Whereas hermal remedies are just like traditional techniques, inconsistent and unpredictable (thus worse) but may yield unique health benefits.
I don’t see how an analogy has to be about aethetics.
So my question is, does A have any other issues than the ones you gave?
I think D actually doesn’t show the traditional method yield worse results. Most would agree traditional facbric, albiet labor intensive and expensive, produce Better quality fabrics than industrial methods.

The third paragraph of the text provides the description that you have to find an analogy for. The process described can basically be boiled down to the artists trying to coax new artistic expressions/ideas out of old techniques.
D is correct because you’re using an old technique/old-style product (loom/irregular texture) to produce a new idea (maybe the clothing designer is trying to start a retro trend). A is incorrect because the researcher is just researching the compounds and didn’t actually make anything new out of it. A would be more correct if it said that the researcher was patenting herbal medicines for a new drug. Ex. Aspirin is based off of willow bark but it isn’t literally willow bark, and is no longer herbal medicine.
