RC Passage 2 Explanation

PASSAGE TEXT: Mechanisms for recognizing kin are found throughout the plant and animal kingdoms, regardless …

Paragraph Summaries

  1. Kin recognition exists across many species, and inclusive fitness theory explains why it evolved. Organisms can increase their genetic success by helping relatives, which explains behaviors like social insects caring for family members instead of reproducing.
  2. Inclusive fitness theory helps explain why some animals avoid eating relatives. Spadefoot toad tadpoles can identify siblings and avoid cannibalizing them, although extreme hunger can make them prioritize their own survival.
  3. Kin recognition may also exist to protect an organism itself, not just its relatives. Tiger salamanders avoid eating relatives because similar immune systems make them more likely to spread deadly diseases.
