Paragraph Summaries

  1. French women’s education remained traditional and unequal for most of the 1800s. After the French Revolution, some reform proposals tried to create more equal education for women and men.
  2. One proposal wanted public education for both sexes but still expected girls to learn domestic skills at home after age 8. Another proposal supported equal education and mixed-gender schools but still viewed women mainly as wives and mothers.
  3. The proposals did not create true equality because society and politics still limited women’s education. Later reforms in the 1880s used these earlier ideas to create better public education for women.
