LR Question 11 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Unless the residents of Glen Hills band together…

QUESTION TYPE: Must be True

FACTS:

  1. If the residents of Glen Hills don’t band together then the following will certainly happen:
  2. The rezoning proposal will go through.
  3. The city will be able to build new water and sewer systems.
  4. These systems will allow developers to build new apartment buildings.
  5. These new buildings will probably lead to overcrowded schools.
  6. The new buildings would definitely lead to road congestion.
  7. The road congestion would cause new roads to be built.
  8. If roads or schools are built then taxes will increase.
  9. If all of these things happen then the rural atmosphere of Glen hills might be destroyed.

ANALYSIS: It’s good to be clear on which elements are necessary conditions and which are sufficient. The residents not banding together is a sufficient condition for a new zoning proposal. But that is only a necessary condition for new water and sewage systems (the city might decide not to build them.) And those systems being built is just a necessary condition for new apartments.

If the apartments are built then everything else either occurs or might occur.

___________

  1. The only way the zoning proposal will fail is if the residents band together. But it could still happen even if the residents band together. The residents could fail.
  2. CORRECT. Yes. Apartments congestion new roads tax increases.
  3. There are plenty of other things that could destroy the rural atmosphere of Glen Hills. An asteroid crash perhaps?
  4. There are other possible reasons for a tax increase. Maybe the town treasurer will run off with all of the money.
  5. There are other reasons that schools and roads could become crowded. New apartment buildings are a sufficient condition but not a necessary condition.
