LSAT Preptest 103 explanations

LR Question 12 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: On their way from their nest to a food source, ants of…

QUESTION TYPE: Most Strongly Supported

FACTS:

  1. Most ants leave pheromones to guide themselves.
  2. Pheromones evaporate in heat above 45 degrees Celsius.
  3. The Sahara desert is above 45 degrees in the afternoons.

ANALYSIS: We can conclude that ant will have difficulty guiding themselves with pheromones during the afternoons in the Sahara.

___________

  1. This would only be true of ants that live in really warm places and use pheromones. Look at your lawn in the afternoon. You’ll see ants, if you don’t live in the Sahara.
  2. We have no idea where most ants of any type live. The stimulus doesn’t say if any ants live in the Sahara.
  3. CORRECT. Pheromones evaporate during Sahara afternoons. So if these ants only forage at that time then pheromones won’t work for them. They must use another method.
  4. Who knows? Some ants might have a completely different navigation method that doesn’t involve leaving any substance at all.
  5. This is only true of ants that leave pheromones. But there could be some Saharan ants that don’t leave pheromones.

Recap: The question begins with “On their way from their nest to a food source, ants of”. It is a Most Strongly Supported question. Learn more about LSAT MSS questions in our guide to LSAT Logical Reasoning question types.
