LR Question 4 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Giselle: The government needs to ensure that the public…

QUESTION TYPE: Flawed Reasoning/Misinterpretation

ANALYSIS: Giselle concludes that gasoline should be taxed so that people will use less of it.

Antoine claims that the government should find another way to raise revenue, because a gasoline tax would disproportionately affect gasoline users. He misses her point which was that governments must find a way to limit gasoline use.

___________

  1. CORRECT. This is it. Antoine missed the point of Giselle’s argument.
  2. That doesn’t matter. He only claimed that such a tax would be unfair to those who are gasoline users.
  3. Unfairness is subjective, but we can debate it since we are able to debate the principles that underlie our subjective definitions of unfairness.
  4. Giselle doesn’t actually advocate any other taxes. Antoine doesn’t accuse her of recommending only a gasoline tax.
  5. This is actually a very plausible assertion since a gasoline tax only affects gasoline users.
