How to Drill Flawed Reasoning
- Find a PrepTest section from the list below that you’ve already done/seen.
- Go through each answer choice, and where the answer is abstract, come up with an example that matches the flaw. It does not have to relate to the stimulus, thought it can.
- Check the explanation for the question, which will have an example of the flaw. Check if your example is correct based on this.
Example: “The conclusion is just a restatement of the evidence provided as support of that conclusion.”
Your job will be to identify what flaw they are describing and come up with an example. In this example, the answer choice is referring to circular reasoning. Examples of circular reasoning could be “I’m trustworthy because I always tell the truth” or “The law is just because it is fair”. In essence, you want to come up with sentences that demonstrate the flaw (in this case restating the premise as the conclusion instead of providing independent support for the conclusion).
Not every explanation has an example for all the answer choices. I have identified the ones that do below, so choose from the list below.
