Preptest 132 Data

Preptest 132 is a new format LSAT Preptest with no logic games section. Its sections come from Preptest 62 (Sections 1, 2 and 4) and Preptest 51 (Section 3). These preptests were administered in December 2010 and December 2006 originally. Section III is the experimental section, which does not count towards your score. It is included in order to let you simulate a four question practice test – the questions themselves are no different in style than the scored sections.

Hello! I have a question regarding Q8, Section 3: why is the main point of the passage E and not A? I had a feeling that E was too narrow, as it mentions what is said in the final paragraph, whereas A is more inclusive as it talks about the whole passage more generally.
Could you please explain why E is correct?

    Thank you!

Hi! Good question. I think the key is that A sounds broad, but it actually adopts one side in the debate, whereas the passage deliberately leaves it unsolved.

      A quick passage overview:

      1. Introduce the LHB and why it matters
      2. Present competing theories about what the LHB was
      3. Introduce new evidence that supports the widespread bombardment view
      4. Ends by emphasizing that more evidence is needed before other theories can be ruled out

The 4th is the important part, because it tells you what the author wants you to take away.

A says the LHB was an intense bombardment affecting the Moon and perhaps the other planets. That takes a contested hypothesis as established fact. But the passage doesn’t conclude that. It says new evidence SUPPORTS that view, but ends off in saying that evidence is still tentative and more data is needed. So A actually overstates what the author commits to.

E captures both parts of the author’s actual position: new evidence favors the hypothesis, but competing theories can’t be excluded yet and more evidence is needed.

It might feel narrow because it only addresses the last paragraph. But that’s where it’s important to have a good sense of what’s happening and the passage structure. The first 2 paragraphs are really just setting up the context and background of the debate, while the last paragraph is where the author’s takeaway comes in.

So, always ask yourself: what does the author want me to walk away from this with? It wouldn’t be: The widespread LHB hypothesis is true (A). It would be: There is promising new evidence for it, but the debate remains unsolved (E).

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have further questions.

    Hello!

I have a question about PT 132, S3, Q15. I understand why (B) is right (issue with view, examples, suggest approach, and discuss 2 questions) – after reviewing I missed the 2 question structure. But I chose (C) because I feel like it loosely fits with the organization. (issue, new VP, examples, and reasons why to adopt it). Is there something I can point to in (C) that is definitively WRONG? And how specific should I get about the structure on these organization questions?

    Thank you!

      Hi!

The final clause in C is the problem (“gives reasons why proponents should abandon it and adopt ..”). The passage never urges proponents of the cultural imperialism thesis to abandon their views or adopt a new one. Instead, the author critiques the lack of empirical grounding and calls for further research (specifically, for a more empirical, anthropological approach). This is a methodological shift, not an ideological one.

So, the key flaw in C is that it mischaracterizes the tone and aim of the passage. That also answers your second question: you DO need to be very precise on structure questions. A wrong answer can get most things accurate, but a single inaccurate claim is enough to eliminate it.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have further questions.
