DISCUSSION: Main idea questions first of all have to be true. You can eliminate answers that contradict the passage.
All of the wrong answers either contradict the passage or aren’t supported by it.
___________
- CORRECT. Lines 15-16 support this. Lichenometry is a new method. The passage describes the advantages of lichenometry, but that’s it. This is a better answer than D.
- The emphasis of the passage is not on lichenometry’s limitations. And we don’t know if it’s more accurate than all other methods. It certainly isn’t more accurate for earthquakes older than 500 years (lines 53-54)
- The passage never mentions “most seismologists”. We only know Bull and Brandon (line 15) are using lichenometry.
- This is a bit strong. The passage never says that lichenometry has “revolutionized” the study of earthquakes. And we don’t know if it’s “easily applied”. You have to go look at lichen on rocks, and carefully consider weather factors.
- This is false. Line 54 says that lichenometry is only useful for earthquakes up to 500 years old.
