DISCUSSION: The passage doesn’t quite answer the question in answer D, but it at least hints at an answer. This is just a “most helps” question.
From the context of the whole passage, we know that Jewett’s idea of fiction influenced the type of books she wrote. Her books were secular and artistic.

- The passage never says if some domestic novels stayed popular after the 1860’s.
- The author actually implies that migration to the cities was not as significant as you might think: see lines 20-25. In any case, we don’t know how urban migration changed fiction.
- CORRECT. In lines 49-51, the author says Jewett viewed her novels as ends in themselves. This probably explains why Jewett’s work wasn’t religious and wasn’t intended to instruct people on how to live.
- The passage never says where Jewett lived.
