DISCUSSION: The author spends the entire passage arguing against this recent position. The argument starts on line 7. The “but” indicates disagreement. Line 13 continues with disagreement: the words “by contrast” means the author disagrees with the “recent criticism” in lines 1-7.
Lines 49-53 state the author’s thesis fully: Jewett and the domestic novelists shouldn’t be placed in the same category.
However, the author does make some concession to the recent criticism. Lines 4-7 say that “Her work does resemble….”. So the author thinks the recent criticism is not completely insane: it’s at least based in real evidence.
___________
- The author disagrees with the recent criticism. See lines 49-53.
- The author disagrees with the recent criticism. See lines 49-53.
- CORRECT. At first I thought this was too wishy-washy. But I reread the first paragraph and decided that it’s a fair characterization. The “reasonable evidence” is the similarity in setting between Jewett’s work and the domestic novels.
Ultimately, the author thinks the recent criticism is wrong, but it’s not entirely without evidence. - The author does think the recent criticism is “questionable”. But not because of any “currently dominant literary aesthetic”. I have no idea what that refers to – the author doesn’t discuss current literature.
- This goes too far. Lines 4-7 show that the recent criticism has some support. The author disagrees with the criticism, but they admit there is at least a little bit of evidence for that view.
