LR Question 12 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: It is probably not true that colic in infants is cause…

QUESTION TYPE: Weaken

CONCLUSION: It’s not likely that colic happens because babies are vulnerable to some antibodies in cow’s milk.

REASONING: Babies also can get colic if they’re fed only breast milk.

ANALYSIS: The correct answer shows that infants fed breast milk are still getting nutrients cow’s milk, because their mothers drink cow’s milk.

Most of the wrong answers don’t do anything to explain what causes colic, or how a baby’s colic could be caused by cow’s milk even if the baby wasn’t fed cow’s milk.

___________

  1. But why do the twins have colic? This tells us nothing. It could be similar genes or similar home environment for the twins.
  2. This tells us that colic isn’t a lifelong disease. But this doesn’t let us make any conclusions about what causes colic.
  3. This tells us that infants won’t always get colic. Who cares? This doesn’t tell us what causes colic.
  4. CORRECT. The infants were getting cows milk through their mothers’ breast milk. So it could still have been the antibodies in cow’s milk that caused colic.
  5. This tells us that infants who drink breast milk are better able to resist colic, if they also drink cow’s milk.

But infants fed breast milk exclusively still get colic. This answer choice doesn’t let us blame cow antibodies.
