LR Question 25 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Tom: Employers complain that people graduating from…

QUESTION TYPE: Relationship Between Arguments

ARGUMENTS: Tom thinks we should force high school students to work at part-time jobs. That way they’ll get job skills.

Mary points out that there aren’t enough part-time jobs even for students who want jobs. We need to create more jobs before we can force people to work.

ANALYSIS: Mary adds crucial context to Tom’s argument. She points out that one of the assumptions underlying his argument isn’t true: there are no jobs that we could force people to work at.

___________

  1. Mary hasn’t really said if there would be any harm that will come when Tom’s plan inevitably fails. She just said his plan just won’t work.

    Poor Tom.
  2. Tom himself is arguing the trend is avoidable. He thinks we can give students skills by forcing them to work.
  3. Tom doesn’t explicitly say “There are jobs.” He just assumes there are.
  4. CORRECT. Tom is implying there are jobs. Mary shows he is wrong.
  5. Mary doesn’t offer a solution. She just says Tom’s idea won’t work.
