DISCUSSION: The guilds were only mentioned once.
Lines 8-10 show that guilds often disciplined their members.
___________
- We only know that few canon lawyer organizations existed before the fourteenth century. Guilds might have existed.
- CORRECT. Lines 8-10 tell us that guilds had a “prominent role” in enforcing ethical standards. This couldn’t have been true unless guilds had influence.
- This is tricky. Guilds were more effective
at punishing ethical lapses, true. But
canon lawyers’ associations did have
ethical standards (lines 5-6). The lawyers
simply never enforced their standards. - Lines 8-10 seem to contradict this. Guilds enforced standards, so presumably they had some ability to enforce discipline. We certainly have no evidence that they did have difficulty.
- Guilds are only mentioned once. We know they enforced standards. We have no idea how guilds varied between cities.
