LSAT 104 | Section 2 | Reading Comprehension: Q6

LSAT Preptest 104 explanations

RC Question 6 Explanation

DISCUSSION: Miles Davis had a long and varied career (lines 53-55). This made him hard for critics to pigeonhole into one style.

The author thought critics were narrow-minded, feared change, and didn’t like any jazz musician they couldn’t classify.

(lines 49-51 and 55-59)

___________

  1. “Improvisational playing” is not all that innovative. Jazz musicians have been improvising for as long as jazz has existed.
  2. CORRECT. The author thought critics disliked Davis because he radically changed his style. This shows that the critics liked other musicians who did the same thing.

So critics might have had other reasons for disliking Davis.
  3. The author’s point was that critics disliked musicians who switched styles. These musicians stick to one style.
  4. Davis had a long career (lines 53-55), so this supports the idea that critics disliked him for the length and variety of his career.
  5. We don’t know whether Davis was more gifted at musicality or technicality. This distinction is never brought up in the stimulus.
