LR Question 9 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Although Damon had ample time earlier in the month to complete the…

QUESTION TYPE: Method of Reasoning

CONCLUSION: Damon must choose between his work and his family [thanks to his procrastination]

REASONING: Damon has enough time to finish his work, but only if his skips his daughter’s ballet recital. He promised to go to the recital. Poor Damon.

ANALYSIS: The argument shows that there is no alternative for Damon, and that the situation was caused by his own laziness. It’s a good argument.

The method is to show that the two situations are mutually exclusive.

___________

  1. The argument hasn’t told us how Damon will choose.
  2. We’re not told that Damon’s responsibilities are similar. A ballet recital seems different from attending a conference.
  3. The argument didn’t excuse Damon. It blamed him for being lazy.
  4. There’s been no harm yet. Damon will only have to make his choice in the future.
  5. CORRECT. It’s impossible for Damon to do both. The argument proved that by showing that Damon has no time to finish his paper if he goes to the ballet recital.
