LSAT Preptest 21 explanations

RC Question 19 Explanation

DISCUSSION: The critics don’t believe abiogenic theory is correct. So they must also believe that the explanation provided by abiogenic theory is incorrect.

Most of the wrong answers are taken from the second paragraph. That paragraph describes the beliefs of abiogenisists.

___________

  1. CORRECT. This is the explanation abiogenic theory gives for oil formation. If critics disagree with abiogenic theory, they likely disagree with this explanation.

Also, the critics said hydrocarbons can’t exist in the mantle, due to the high temperatures there.
  2. This could be true, according to biogenic theory, as long as there once was organic matter in that location.
  3. Actually, the critics would probably disagree with this statement. They don’t think the formation of oil has anything to do with processes within the earth’s mantle.
  4. This is something that abiogenic advocates believe (lines 15-20).
  5. Only abiogenic advocates think that methane from the mantle help form oil (lines 11-14).
