LSAT Preptest 21 explanations

RC Question 20 Explanation

DISCUSSION: The new theory has convinced the Swedes to risk money by searching in a type of place where no oil has ever been found before.

Abstractly, here’s what’s going on:

A new theory convinces a group to look for the same thing in a new place.

___________

  1. This would be a better example if the scientists were looking for butterflies in places where no one had ever observed them, based on the new theory’s predictions.
  2. CORRECT. The astronomers are looking for the same thing (a black hole) in a new place, based on a new theory.
  3. This doesn’t describe a group searching for something new in a new place.
  4. This would be better if the group were looking for photosynthesis in different types of cells.
  5. This would be better if the company looked for silver in new locations.
