LR Question 16 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Allowing more steel imports would depress domestic…

QUESTION TYPE: Parallel Reasoning

CONCLUSION: The government won’t get rid of steel import restrictions.

REASONING: The government won’t hurt the steel industry. Allowing more imports would hurt the steel industry.

ANALYSIS: This is a good argument. This question is pretty easy if can just wade through answers A-D, which are all bad arguments.

The basic structure is:

X will harm Y. The organization won’t support X, because the organization doesn’t support anything that harms Y.

___________

  1. This is a bad argument. Confidence in the economy is a necessary condition for construction but it isn’t a sufficient condition.
  2. Hard to say. Current laws might not be very effective at keeping people safe if they work at computers.
  3. This is a bad argument. It hasn’t shown that deregulation caused airline bankruptcies. It’s only shown that the two things happened together.
