LSAT Preptest 107 explanations

LR Question 18 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: To classify a work of art as truly great, it is…

QUESTION TYPE: Principle – Most Strongly Supported

PRINCIPLE: Great arts needs:

  1. Originality
  2. Far-reaching influence on the art community.

ANALYSIS: This principle lets us conclude that a work is not great if it lacks one of these two things.

They’re only necessary conditions for greatness, so this principle won’t ever let us conclude anything is great. There might be something else needed.

___________

  1. This is missing far-reaching influence. Even then, we can never conclude any art is great.
  2. CORRECT. This is correct. The art lacks a necessary condition for greatness, even though it is original.
  3. This has both of the conditions, but they are only necessary conditions. They might not be sufficient to make art great.
  4. Originality is a necessary condition for greatness, but the reverse is not true. A work can be original even if it isn’t great.
  5. We know any great work has the two qualities listed in the stimulus, but we don’t know if all great work has popular appeal, too.

Recap: The question begins with “To classify a work of art as truly great, it is”. It is a Principle question. Learn more about LSAT Principle questions in our guide to LSAT Logical Reasoning question types.
