LSAT Preptest 109 explanations

LR Question 12 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Most adults in country X consume an increasing…

QUESTION TYPE: Most Strongly Supported

FACTS:

  1. In country X, people eat more fat when they’re older.
  2. But the percentage of their food that is fat stays the same.

ANALYSIS: This is easiest to explain with an example. Let’s say that 30% of the food you eat is fat. This is true when you’re 20, and when you’re 75.

But you eat a larger amount of fat when you’re 75. Say, 800 calories of fat, compared to 650 calories.

There’s only one way that could be true: you eat more food at 75. Maybe 2,000 calories when you’re 20, and 2,500 when you’re 75.

___________

  1. We have no idea what people do in other countries.
  2. CORRECT. This is the only way to eat more fat while keeping the percentage of fat you eat the same.
  3. We have no idea what children eat. The stimulus only tells us about adults.
  4. Food variety makes no difference. I can eat the an equivalent percentage of fat by eating nothing but eggs or by eating meat and a variety of vegetables.
  5. We have no idea if older people gain or lose weight. We’d have to know how much exercise they get.

Recap: The question begins with “Most adults in country X consume an increasing”. It is a Most Strongly Supported question. Learn more about LSAT MSS questions in our guide to LSAT Logical Reasoning question types.
