QUESTION TEXT: It would be wrong to conclude that…
QUESTION TYPE: Parallel Reasoning
CONCLUSION: You can have streptococcus bacilli in your throat without having an infection.
REASONING: You only get an infection if you have the bacilli and you’re physically run down.
ANALYSIS: This is a good argument. Being tired is a necessary condition. So just seeing the bacilli means nothing, if we don’t know that the person is tired, too.
(even then, having the bacteria and being tired are necessary conditions, not sufficient conditions)
The right answer will show that one thing alone isn’t enough. We need to know about another necessary condition, at least.
___________
- This is a good argument, but it’s not the same argument. The stimulus said an infection can’t occur without tiredness. Here, you could get blurred vision just from a physical defect.
- CORRECT. This is it. Lavender has at least two necessary conditions for blooming. Just sunlight isn’t enough, we also need to know the soil is alkaline.
- This is similar to A. It shows there are multiple reasons why a bee colony could fail. It’s a good argument, but it doesn’t have the same “two necessary condition” structure of the stimulus.
- This isn’t even a good argument. We’re not given any evidence why two males won’t produce more berries than one male.
- This is a good argument, with a subtle difference from the stimulus. If you have exceptionally high blood pressure, then you probably aren’t hypertensive. You need to normally have high blood pressure.
So unusually high blood pressure is actually consistent with not being hypertensive (if your normal blood pressure is good). But having streptococcus bacilli is evidence that there may be an infection, if the host is tired, too.
