LR Question 14 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: If the proposed tax reduction package is adopted this…

QUESTION TYPE: Sufficient Assumption

CONCLUSION: The tax reduction won’t pass.

REASONING: If the tax reductions passes, story hours at the library will stop. This will inconvenience parents.

ANALYSIS: The tax cuts don’t have to fail just because parents will be inconvenienced. Tax cuts (and consequent spending cuts) always inconvenience someone.

We’re trying to make this argument good. If we say that a law will not pass if it inconveniences parents, that will do the trick.

___________

  1. We’re trying to prove that a tax package won’t be passed. This helps show that other tax passages will be passed, so how does it help?
  2. We already know this is true: discontinuing story hours will hurt parents. This just says that other tax packages will also have the same effect. Since we already knew that would happen with the tax package in question, this doesn’t help.
  3. This pack of nonsense jumbles together terms from the stimulus to confuse you. It says that if a tax reduction package inconveniences parents, then story hours will be cut. But we already know this tax package cuts story hours and inconveniences parents. We don’t care about tax packages in general.
  4. CORRECT. This does it. It means we won’t pass the tax reduction package this year, because it would greatly inconvenience parents.
  5. We’re trying to prove that a certain tax reduction package won’t be passed. This doesn’t help us do that, it talks about what would allow a tax package to be passed.

Recap: The question begins with “If the proposed tax reduction package is adopted this”. It is a Sufficient Assumption question. Learn more about LSAT Sufficient questions in our guide to LSAT Logical Reasoning question types.
