LR Question 11 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Not surprisingly, there are no professors under the…

QUESTION TYPE: Must be True

FACTS:

  1. If you’re under 18, you’re not a professor and you can’t vote.
  2. Some brilliant people vote (and thus are 18 or over)
  3. Some brilliant people are professors (and thus are 18 or over)
  4. Some brilliant people are under 18 (and thus aren’t professors or voters).

ANALYSIS: I’ve combined the premises above (in the brackets).

We can conclude that some brilliant people aren’t professors or voters, because they’re too young.

___________

  1. Tempting, but the stimulus said that no professor is under 18.
  2. We only know some brilliant people are in those three groups. But brilliant people could be in other groups, too. For instance, a brilliant, 28 year old lawyer who isn’t a professor and hates voting.
  3. In real life this is true. But in the stimulus, we have no evidence for this. We’re not told about anyone 18 or older who isn’t a professor.
  4. We’re not told much about professors: we only know they’re 18 or older. We don’t know if any of them are dumb or banned from voting.
  5. CORRECT. This is true of those brilliant people who are younger than 18. They can’t vote or be professors.
