LSAT 101, Section 1, RC Passage 2, Korean American

LSAT Preptest 101 explanations

RC Passage 2 Explanation

Paragraph Summaries

  1. A Korean union traveled to the US to demand compensation.
  2. Many Korean groups supported the Pico Union, for a variety of reasons.
  3. The human drama of the story united the Korean community.
  4. History and culture aren’t enough to unite an immigrant community. The community may need to involve themselves in the struggles of their home country.

Analysis

The second paragraph is long, and full of detail. Almost all of the detail is irrelevant. Don’t bother trying to memorize that sort of detail. Instead, refer back to it if a question asks about it.

Only question nine requires you to go through paragraph two.

There are several possible points of confusion in this passage.

First: the Pico Union is not a Korean-American group. They’re just Koreans who came to America to fight for their cause. Their trip mobilized the Korean American community to support them.

Second: We’re not told about any other immigrant communities. A lot of wrong answers mention other communities.

Third: The point of the passage is that the Korean American example could help other immigrant communities grow stronger. They key is to maintain ties to the mother country.

But we don’t know if any community has applied this lesson.
