DISCUSSION: The studies say people ignore everyday risks (e.g. going too fast on the highway), and worry about improbable but mysterious risks.
(e.g. what if the material on my car seat is poisonous?!)
___________
- This sounds like a good move. Jumping with a tangled parachute is a big, predictable risk.
- Same as A. Smoking is an everyday, predictable risk. Most people ignore it, but not this person.
- Radon is a fairly exotic risk, but second hand smoke is a known danger. We’re looking for someone who pays attention to exotic risks but ignores known dangers.
- CORRECT. This is a silly example, which is what you’re looking for. Everyone knows its dangerous to dodge in and out of traffic. It’s more sensible to worry about that than to worry about meteorites, but this person does the opposite.
- First, the townsfolk aren’t ignoring any known risks. Second, the risk from a nuclear waste dump isn’t that exotic. There might be local factors that make an accident probable.
