LR Question 5 Explanation

QUESTION TEXT: Consumer: I would like to have the features contained in the latest…

QUESTION TYPE: Flawed Reasoning

CONCLUSION: You probably won’t experience problems if you upgrade.

REASONING: Less than 3.3% of people have called in to say they’ve had problems after upgrading.

ANALYSIS: If you buy something, and there’s a problem, how often do you complain? Most people just throw the thing in the garbage, and don’t tell anybody. Or they fix the problem on their own.

For every person who complains, there might be ten more who didn’t bother.

___________

  1. This supports the argument that there’s no risk to upgrading. Even if there’s a problem, it will get fixed later.
  2. The representative’s conclusion was specific: it’s unlikely the customer will have a problem. The representative never said how serious the reported problems are.
  3. CORRECT. If this is true, then it seems pretty likely the customer will have a problem if he upgrades.
  4. This strengthens the argument for upgrading. You’re bound to have a problem if you don’t upgrade.
  5. “Some” is very vague. It could mean that two out of the 100 callers had caused the problem themselves. That doesn’t do anything.

If anything, this shows that problems might be avoided if you follow instructions.
