LSAT Preptest 103 explanations

RC Question 4 Explanation

DISCUSSION: Taxation and national service are both things that the government can legitimately force us to do. The government limits our rights for the greater good.

___________

  1. Lines 25-26 say that taxes do have to be coerced.
  2. The author thinks conscription and taxation are consistent with our liberal democratic rights. See lines 1-10.
  3. This makes little sense. The two things are alike because they are different?

The author’s point was that they’re both ways the government can legitimately force us to give up some rights.
  4. The author thinks the government is within the boundaries of its authority when it taxes citizens or forces them to join the army.
  5. CORRECT. Lines 40-44 show that taxes sometimes act to benefit the nation even though they aren’t necessary to the state’s survival.

Lines 44-50 show how national service can benefit the nation even if the state’s survival isn’t at risk.
