LSAT Preptest 103 explanations

RC Question 5 Explanation

DISCUSSION: See lines 40-50. The author claims that everyone agrees taxes are justified if they benefit the nation.

The four wrong answers provide examples of taxes that benefit the nation.

The right answer is a tax that benefits foreigners.

___________

  1. This helps protect the nation.
  2. CORRECT. Helping foreigners may be a nice thing to do, but it’s not clear how this directly helps the nation.
  3. The standing army protects the nation. Opponents of conscription would be fine with this as long as there was no conscription.
  4. Dams and bridges provide a benefit for the nation.
  5. Helping citizens who were hurt by natural disasters provides a benefit to the nation.
