DISCUSSION: See lines 18-24. Porter proved that the two artists were African-American.
It’s sort of a strange finding. It sounds like the artists thought they were white, but Porter proved that they had African ancestry, thanks to their drawings.
___________
- We don’t know if Duncanson and Johnston’s work defined the Hudson River school.
- All we know about Duncanson and Johnston is that they were part of the school and that their work was influenced by African art.
Maybe all of their work was in the Hudson River school style. - We’re never told a single thing about
Euro-American painters. Duncanson and Johnston were not Euro-Americans (lines 20-24). - CORRECT. This is true. Porter proved that Duncanson and Johnston were African-Americans, and they were members of the school. See lines 18-24.
- The passage doesn’t say that all of the African art that influenced African-Americans was West African art.
Porter’s early research focussed on West Africa (lines 6-12). Later, he might have found that art from other parts of Africa also influenced African-American art.
